Hanover County Public Schools
Mechanicsville, Virginia, USA

Nominator:
Sarah Calveric

Rebecca Evan
How Has Your Nominee Been a Trailblazer Implementing Technology into Instruction?

Mrs. Evan is a champion of technology integration within Hanover County Public Schools. Her contagious demeanor and promotion of instructional technology have "infected" all educators! Rebecca regularly collaborates with teachers to ensure they're proficient with the most recently acquired tools and programs. Specifically, Mrs. Evan was instrumental in securing grant funds used to purchase Classroom Performance System clickers. She worked diligently to train teachers and students on how to best utilize these interactive and engaging resources to enhance student achievement. Additionally, when new technology was acquired by one of her numerous schools, Mrs. Evan played a vital role in researching and installing the equipment and providing essential professional development. The training not only included operational information, but also highlighted previously developed lessons which aligned and extended our Standards of Learning.

Mrs. Evan works collaboratively with her ITRT team to maintain a password-protected Blackboard site called “Tech Ponds”, where an extensive repertoire of SOL-correlated websites is located.  This site is quickly and easily accessible to Hanover County students, parents, and teachers.  She is also developing a similar site called “Tech Ponds for Teachers” where teachers can access lesson plans that integrate technology and 21st century skills with the core content as well as pre-made activities developed in programs that include Inspiration, Kidspiration, PowerPoint, Excel, SMART Notebook, and Classroom Performance System.  These activities often include links to the internet and Discovery Education video clips.  How-to guides for programs and links to internet resources outside of HCPS are also available on the “Tech Ponds for Teachers” site.  She has successfully piloted this site with 4th and 5th grade teachers at two of her schools.  Mrs. Evan is also a Blackboard administrator for the county, which requires the creation and management of Blackboard courses throughout the county, including providing professional development on its usage in instruction.

Supporting Resources:

Mrs. Evan has developed numerous resources which are readily accessible to Hanover County educators. These extensive repertoire of technology resources is located on the county's intranet, which enables quick and easy access for students and teachers. Within the intranet program, Tech Ponds, students can locate subject specific websites to practice and apply content skills. Teachers access Tech Ponds to locate lesson plans, graphic organizers, websites, PowerPoints, and other technology related items.  Mrs. Evan is also the county BlackBoard administrator, which requires the creation and management of BlackBoard courses throughout the county.
