How Your
Nominee Has Shown Leadership Successfully Implementing Technology into
Instruction?
Chris Lehmann has done an exceptional job of creating
a school and fostering an environment that values 21st Century skills and
habits of mind. Often Chris can be heard telling visitors to the school that
technology should be “ubiquitous, necessary, and invisible.” What these values
translate to at Science Leadership Academy is a school where all students have
laptops and teachers use lessons that smoothly integrate technology as part of
larger units of study.
To be a teacher or a student at SLA means that one is
constantly learning from peers and sharing both tech tips and larger ideas
about the role of technology and 21st Century skills in the classroom and in
our lives. This school ethos is a direct result of Chris’ leadership and the
behaviors that he models to the larger school community.
SLA is a school unified by “moodle” an open source
interface that allows teachers to communicate with students, students to
communicate with each other, and both teachers and student to discuss larger
school wide issues in separate discussion areas. The systems and equipment that
we have along with the larger beliefs about technology that are put into
practice at SLA result in an environment that is rich and tech infused but familiar and not overwhelming to those who
have very little experience with technology prior to arriving at SLA.
His leadership at the school level is key to the
growth and systemic success we have seen since the school began. In addition to his work as the principal, he
also hosts EduCon, an innovation conference that brings educators from across
the nation and the world to foster conversation about 21st learning and
innovation. His day-to-day work in the
school, coupled with his efforts to further the innovation and reform conversations
throughout the educational community, make Chris Lehmann one of the most
versatile and effective leaders in schools today.
Sincerely,
Will Richardson
