How Your Nominee Has Shown Leadership Successfully Implementing Technology into Instruction?

Mr. Walker came to Jefferson one year ago.  At that time, instructional technology was an individual endeavor.  The internet was used sporadically and mainly to research for big projects.  Now, after only one year, there is strong evidence of expansion of use of technology based instructional strategies and materials:

Digital Storytelling

Middle School Computer Applications Course – now includes the development of digital storytelling

Middle School Departments have utilized digital storytelling in all curriculum areas.

IDU Example- Math/LA – Math Story

HS Communications  Course – Radio Broadcast - Kucinski

HS Language Arts – PSA Movies – Mrs. Daken

Digital Posters

Teachers have created digital posters that include interactive content. (Interactive websites, Video Clips, Pictures, and Text). They are used as instructional tools as well as resources for review for students.  Example: http://ceil.edu.glogster.com/frog-and-toad/

Students have created digital posters for various topics in elementary, middle school and high school classes. These posters are interactive and contain an assortment of multimedia.  Elementary Example:  http://sdm69jk.edu.glogster.com/juan-ponce-de-leon/

Utilization of Web-Based Course Management and Social Networking Resources

Social Networking - HS Language Arts- Using Ning Social Networks to support instruction. These social networks include threaded discussions, digital journals, sharing or documents and links, posting of videos and images and collection of assignments.

Moodle – Various teachers have started to utilize Moodle (web-based course management software). Moodle courses include threaded discussions, posting of resources, links to web-based resources, quizzes, and sharing/collecting coursework. http://blogs.jefftwp.org/

Blogs- High School faculty have started to create blog/websites. Many are posting class homework, documents, resources and links of interest. http://www.jefftwp.org/HighSchool/hswebsitedir.shtml

Wiki’s – Some of our faculty have started to use wiki’s as a virtual instruction tool. We have used them to collaborate with classrooms in other countries as well as an internal collaborative authoring tool. http://globalhealthissues.wikispaces.com

Mr. Walker has enabled the students in our school district to become 21st century learners.  He has supplied teachers with the instruction and tools to infuse technology into their lessons.  He started a district initiative to have teachers communicate with parents and students through blogs.  Mr. Walker continually offers outlets for educators to supplement and enhance their instruction through teaching them to incorporate activities such as digital stories, digital posters, webinars with other educational professionals, wikis, etc.

Mr. Walker has made a concerted effort in moving our district into the 21st Century of technological literacy.  Students have moved from pen and paper posters to using Glogster to create digital posters designed for an authentic audience.  Mr. Walker has introduced Ning as a social networking tool for educators and currently several teachers have opened global connections with schools in Asia, India, and Europe.  Students have Skyped with military personnel around the globe.  Teachers, under the guidence of Mr. Walker, have been assigning students media based projects using photo story and movie maker to combine music, images, and student narratives into a project that sparks collaboration and critical thinking.  Teachers have shelved textbooks and have created internet based classes using Moodle and Google as the primary vechile to student learning and web-based interactions.  Mr. Walker is a most competent technology instructor whose passion for education is inspiring to his colleagues and peers.  He would be an excellent canidate for this honor and I recommend him without reservation.
