Description: Implementing the 21st Century skills will require teachers and administrators to become knowledgeable in the 21st century skills and related technologies. Schools must design instruction to promote collaboration and higher-level thinking to integrate the emerging 21st century core academics, learning tools, and contexts to promote active student engagement in challenging, authentic, and intellectual work.
Outcomes: Through this interactive course participants will explore the implications of curriculum design, teaching, assessment, and strategies for implementing the 21st century skills as a foundation for student learning and achievement. Course participants will design and evaluate 21st century learning activities and develop a related implementation plan that can be used in the classroom.
Topics will include: -Purpose and profile of 21st century skills;
-21st century learning tools and contexts;
-Creating 21st century learning activities;
-Assessing 21st century learning and skills; and
-Strategies for planning, implementation, and institutionalization.
Objectives: -Learn the purpose and use for 21st century learning skills;
-Explore and evaluate interactive activities using technology and higher-level thinking as a learning process;
-Create 21st century learning activities for use in a classroom/school;
-Learn to evaluate the 21st century learning process and skills;
-Review steps for planning and implementation;
-Explore related Internet resources; and
-Develop a 21st Century Plan for implementation.
Technology Requirements:
-An Internet connection, preferably broadband
-An up-to-date browser
-Up-to-date Java
-Adobe Acrobat Reader
-Wiki resources and discussion work
-An up-to-date media player (e.g. Windows Media and Quicktime)
-A word processing package (e.g. Microsoft Word or similar)
-Elluminate online conferencing platform will be used for synchronistic sessions and collaborative group work.
-Headset with microphone (a USB plugin).
-Use of a webcam is optional. You will be able to see and hear the presenter.
